Nutrition counselling – Nutrition and the therapeutic use of foods are the root of naturopathic medicine. Many medical conditions are linked to food intolerances, deficiencies, imbalances or excesses. NDs assess your diet and understand the impact your diet is having on your health. Diet plans are suggested and as well as nutritional supplements when needed. Remember: You are what you eat.
Lifestyle counselling – Mental and emotional states have a huge impact on our health; all aspects of a person’s life must be addressed in order to achieve optimal wellness.
Homeopathy – This type of medicine is over 200 years old and using the principle ‘like cures like’. Remedies are made from specific dilutions of plant, animal and mineral substances. When matched to the patient’s constitution, the remedies are able to shift the body’s vital force in order to stimulate innate healing.
Botanical Medicine – Herbs are safe and effective treatments for many conditions. Herbs can be prepared in many forms including salves, creams, syrups, tinctures, teas, capsules, and powders. I recently took a course in Toronto with herbalist, John Redden, who taught us how to grow our own herbs and then use them to make our own tinctures, salves, and creams.
Traditional Chinese Medicine including acupuncture – The principle of Chinese medicine is to ensure the ‘qi’ (vital energy) of the person is balanced. All organs are connected by meridians (channels) and treatments will ensure that the ‘qi’ can flow freely through the meridians. Acupuncture, eastern herbs and cupping are used to promote healthy ‘qi’ throughout the body. Acupuncture is the use of very thin needles which are inserted into specific meridian points. Acupuncture has been used for over two thousand years and has proven to be very effective for pain relief and chronic illness.
Cosmetic Acupuncture-The use of fine needles to decrease the appearance of wrinkles, reduce skin sagging and improve overall skin appearance. Has been referred to as a ‘natural face lift’. (www.luminousbeauty.com).
Physical Medicine – Treatments can include soft tissue work, naturopathic manipulation, hydrotherapy techniques, ultrasound, laser therapy and exercise therapy.
